"Butterfly House"

Many years ago we went to Calloway Gardens.  There we found a large glass room, filled with beautiful plants and even more beautiful butterflies.  The butterflies flew around inside their artificial home, landing here and there.  Often they would land on our shoulders or hands.  It sent a shiver of delight and wonder through me.  I wanted to stay there forever watching these beautiful flyers and having them as friends.

So of course my village has to have a Butterfly House -- life wouldn't be complete without it.  And it will honor these beauties who are having a difficult time in the environment that we have created.

I was inspired by some paper that I found at a nearby scrapbook store, brought it home and printed it onto fabric, thus giving me a door.

I had a lovely died piece of silk ribbon which had been waiting years for the proper use.  A few seed stitches added some texture.

The back of some garish buttons matched my colors and added a little bit of whimsy.

Just remember...

"Without butterflies, the world would soon have few flowers.  There is enough room in the sky for all flyers." - Trina Paulus

  1. Lovely! AND I am smiling SO big. Your creativity is expansive. Adding a butterfly house to your village is an unexpected direction. It takes my mind to Bat House, Snail House and of course Bird House.

  3. And I note that you remind us -sometimes the back looks as good or in the case of your buttons! - better for the purpose than the front. It's always worth checking..

  4. Another fantastic house, how do you print onto the fabric. I love the door.

You can purchase fabric that will go through a regular computer. I bring the image up on my screen, size, recolor, whatever I want to do and then print it on the printable fabric. It comes in both silk and cotton. I bought my last batch on-line although some shops sell it also.

  6. This will be a village like no other, and I love that you used buttons. I also like seeing your printed fabric process again. It adds so much, and is very creative. My display doesn't reveal the charm very well, what is it? It's perfect there.

  8. Guess what, Penny - I've been in that same butterfly house ... Fuller and Alice Callaway were my godparents! Small world. Like your small houses! And they are becoming a small village?
