Deep Within the Forest

Each summer, as I walk up the hill, I lose more and more of my 'view'.  I am hemmed in by trees and shrubs and while a patch of sky might show through - looking into the forest I only see a wall of green.

In past years this has disturbed me.  Being an 'open spaces' person, claustrophobia can sometimes set in.  This year, having had my 'desert fix' and the wide open spaces,  I'm finding the trees to be a solace.  This year they are sheltering me rather than holding me in their vast green grip.

Today as I walked I spotted the first of the berries that sometime appear and sometimes don't  They seem quite abundant this year, but very slow to ripen.  However I did end up with a small handful and I'll be walking with my little collecting bag for the next week or so.

  1. Woodlands vary a lot - some are very dark and enclosed and some have a lot of space, and I think it depends on when the various plants are at their most luxuriant...

  2. I have never been to the desert but think I would find great beauty and would love it. When you drive the back roads of Northern Indiana, you are blessed to see rolling hills and various grain planted fields. We took our grandkids to Mammoth Cave State Park in Ky about 10 years ago. It was my second time of being in the mountains.I was raised on Lake Michigan. If I couldn't live on a lake, I think I would choose mountains. But don't we always want to live somewhere that we don't!!

    Have a great weekend.

  3. We lived in Oklahome for 7 years when younger, and wide open spaces were all around. But I'm a born and bred Jersey girl, and I wasn't that enamored with the space. Now we have woods like yours, Penny, in every direction from our house. I feel so embraced by them, and you are right...each year they become more dense. I love that as I revere shade. I know it's summer, but I totally avoid the sun everywhere I go. I'll walk a half mile to a store from the far reaches of a parking lot to park in the shade. A bonus is it is good exercise. I don't think I'd do well in the desert. Sometimes in the summer I have to go home from the bay for a few days just to sit under our trees.

  4. I'm a tree lover too. Coming from the relatively wide open skies of East Anglia and living in a very flat part of Lincolnshire, I love the encircling nature of hills and woods. Are those blackberries, by the way?
