Every time I open a drawer in my bedroom there is that slight scent that takes me outdoors on a sunny day walking through fields of lavender.
In mid-afternoon I stop everything, if I can, and take up a small square of dark chocolate. I break it in four pieces letting the scent speak for the taste I'm soon going to have.
How many beautiful scents can you think of? Some of mine are new moan grass, herbal teas (any kind *smile*), sun warmed pine needles on the ground, anything sweet baking in the oven.
Sometimes a memory from the past comes flooding into my mind with just the slightest scent that represents that time.
"Nothing is more memorable than a smell. One scent can be unexpected, momentary and fleeting, yet conjure up a childhood summer beside a lake in the mountains." - Diane Ackerman
I don't think my sense of smell is as acute as yours. I have allergies and have probably ruined it with steroids. I can distinctly smell the bad stuff that you wish you couldn't smell...gas..dog farts..HORSE manure on the neighbors garden (cow manure would be a blessing, lol). Seriously, I smell the scents from the oven, Old Spice, and my favorite cologne. I LOVE when lilac wafts through the air. I miss the smell of the beach. Now THERE are some memories with THAT scent!!
ReplyDeleteHave a great holiday weekend.

A really good lamb casserole... Smelling the gum trees in the Australian bush... Woodsmoke... Bliss!
ReplyDeleteAhhh, just recently I was reminded of my elderly grandparents' home when I opened a bottle of prune juice. Lol! Bread baking is a favorite in my house. Also, I'm loving lilacs this time of year.
ReplyDeleteYou've conjured up so many wonderful scent memories here! Warm pine needles on the ground - yes! Walking past a shrub of wild roses. Letting the scent of apple spice tea fill my classroom. Mmm!

ReplyDeleteLulu -- How could I forget apple spice. I think each season has its own iconic scents and isn't fun to explore them as the time comes around. - Penny
ReplyDeleteToast. Walking into breakfast each morning of the 4 years I spent at teacher training college. Some of my happiest times...
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific topic! Scent, fragrance is one of the very best things about the changes of the seasons for me. Right now I am enjoying the magnolias, honeysuckle, and peonies, freshly dug earth, coffee and bacon in the morning, strawberry popsicles, and even sunscreen! I could go on and on...... :))))))
