Weather Woes

This picture does NOT reflect what is outside my window today!  There has been no snow here at all (well, maybe one skiff, hardly noticeable at the end of December).  Every year in this area people worry about snow.  We live in a hilly country with lots of curvy roads.  When it snows we are paralyzed!  The school buses can't maneuver the roads, there is little if any snow removal by the city/county and you had better have some kind of stock of food on hand.

This year, with no snow and flowers blooming in February there are a whole new set of worries.  Our agricultural crops of apples, peaches and berries are vital to the economy.  Everyone is now worried that the buds will come on and then be frozen by a late (very late) winter snow and/or deep freeze.

There has been so much discussion throughout the community - worrying about the weather.  We worry when snow is predicted - we worry when no snow is predicted.  I have to wonder if perhaps the gobbles we hear from the wild turkeys that wander our neighborhood are merely more discussion about the winter of 2011/2012.

"Sometimes I wish that I was the weather, you'd bring me up in conversation forever.  And when it rained, I'd be the talk of the day." - John Mayer

  1. I guess its pretty much that way across the country. I have grass and plants that are still green. Crazy ice fishermen are getting stranded. They go out in the morning and by the time they come in, the ice near the shore has melted in the sun.

We'll see how it goes, but I'm glad its been a warm one. I just hope we don't pay for it by having a crappy summer.
    xx, Carol

  2. It's the same here. Already they're on the news talking about droughts and hose-pipe bans.....failed crops and rocketing food prices!

Doesn't seem to matter what happens... we ALWAYS end up having to pay for it somehow :-(((

  3. Laughed out loud at the thought of the turkeys having a conversation about the weather. Too funny!

  4. I live on the dry side of Washington State and we are facing the same problem - will there be enough water this summer. We have had snow, but not nearly enough. My inlaws lived in the hills above Brevard and I remember negotiating those road in snow and even worse - ice. Crossing my fingers that snow will still happen, but Mom Nature is running out of time.

  5. At least the weather has no malice, and it's the same for everyone!
