The Sense of Sound

I tend to seek out quiet, silent places these days.  Soft conversations with friends, music in my studio background, and the natural sounds that accompany me while walking up and down the hill each day.

Sound can be beautiful.   The sound of music, the sound of your child's first spoken words, the whispers when awed by something wonderful.

Sadly we have created a very NOISY (I'm yelling that you see) world.  People shout, they don't talk.  Strident voices report the hellish news each day.  Horns honk, radios blare.  There are motors and engines and loud noises everywhere.

We have all these holidays each year celebrating this person or that person- which in turn creates more noise because there are 'special' sales on that day or noisy fireworks or parades.  I wish we could have one day - 24 hours  - of silence.  It would never be fully silent for nature makes its own sounds.  From the bird call to the rustling under the leaves. Perhaps we could even hear the tinkle of a small stream.

But the stars would come out in silence, the sun would rise in silence and our lives could be pursued with only the natural noises that speak to the essence of our life.

"Soon silence will have passed into legend.  Man has turned his back on silence.  Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation." - Jean Arp

  1. You and I are certainly in tune. We have renters across the street. LOUD car exhaust systems and motor cycles that always seem to need repair by revving motors. Even the night brings noise from the near by highways.

The bird feeders at the front patio doors give me all the music I need.

  2. Motors, engines, trains - and neighbours who sing Kate Bush songs at midnight...
I'd settle for quiet, without even demanding silence!

  3. Tried to comment this morning, trying again. Just want to say how nice it is to be reminded of things we take for granted. Sense of sound is one of those. Thanks, Penny!

  4. I too love quiet. and solitude. I don't think there are very many people like us, Penny. It seems that most people can't stand quiet. I have decided that they are afraid of it.

  5. I'm grateful for being able to (usually) choose the sounds I bring into my peaceful home - and advantage of living in a cul-de-sac with mostly elderly neighbours. :o)

  6. I have no noise in my studio these days...

No music, radio, anything...when I'm creating.

Some traffic noise breaks through the double-glazing, but mostly I'm in a quiet place for most of the day.

    Bliss...

  7. When I'm thinking or problem solving, my studio is silent. Once I'm down to details that can be done effortlessly, without decisions, I can listen to shows on the computer or to public radio. The rest of the house is always quiet...until my husband comes home. Oh, unless the Triad (those 3 bad cats) get rambunctious and chase each other around yowling.
