Written in Stone

While out in Nevada we visited a site called Grimes Point.  Thousands of years ago there was a huge lake in this part of the desert.  Along the shores of that lake lived a group of people who made markings on the rocks (petroglyphs).

Usually, when petroglyphs are found they are representational.  They show pictures that are easily recognized - such as deer or horses or people hunting.  These at Grimes Point are more abstract.  To this day it is not known what these markings mean. They are symbolic of something but we will probably never know what the people who made these marks were saying.

To stand and look at these rocks, to know that people lived there thousands of years ago, they were born, raised their families, contributed to the community and communicated in a way that we can't understand is awe inspiring to me.  There is no lake there now, and hasn't been for centuries, the landscape seems so unlivable and yet here we have evidence that there was a society there at one time.  I would love to transport myself back in time just to take a peek at this long gone group of people, to put myself in their space and time, wouldn't you?

  1. Glad I found your post on petroglyphs. At the moment my world is all about helleristninger, scandanavian petroglyphs and bringing them back alive.
