My Kitchen Window

Earlier this year I decided to do all the dishes by hand.  Standing in front of the sink, feeling the warm water and suds on my hands and looking out the window as the seasons, one by one go by -- what a joy.

It has been a total delight to see the seasons present themselves in the woods behind our house.  I have to say that Autumn, which seems to have ended well before the deadline, was nothing less than a joy to observe.  Wanting to keep a 'record' of that beautiful season I filled a box lid with my two favorite leaves.  Happily I'll have them nearby to take me through these somewhat barren days of Winter.

It was as if overnight, the weather got cold and the trees shed their colorful leaves.  Each season brings its own beauty and these days my window frames bare branches, the 'bones of the trees are outlined against deep blue skies.

  1. Since there are only two of us at home now, I usually do the dishes by hand, too. Feels like less trouble than filling up the dishwasher and then having to empty it. :)

I love your two beautiful leaves. And the quote!

    1. Oh yes, it is. Today is a dull gray day so no beautiful blue sky - but it will come back soon.

  3. I'm feeling the wisdom of doing dishes by hand, especially since hot water would be helpful on my hands. The window frames an ever-changing painting by nature. I like that you have no curtain. I'm curtain purging these days. Have had them for decades. We live in the woods, so they only catch dust and block nature's beautiful views. Your Box Lid Art is also a lovely inspiration! Where do you find just the right background paper?

  4. To answer Barbara's question on paper for box lid art. At one time I ordered hand made paper -- plus I find the scrapbook section at Micheal's is is very good place to fine paper - especially with themes. I have to make sure that the paper itself isn't too thick to fold over and around.

  5. Good Morning friend.
I once had a dishwasher. A portable one that was rarely used. Washing dishes is rarely a chore, but a quiet time to meditate the "events" of the day.

I have a vivid memory from a few years ago on Thanksgiving of looking out the window at the almost barren trees watching a leaf or two gracefully drift to the ground. Today, I look out that window and find WAY too many leaves still hanging on. I'll probably see them laying on top of the snow that we are expecting to receive next weekend.

    Much love to you
    Carol

    1. Hi Carol

Fortunately our leaves are all down and pushed into piles for decomposing -- thanks to my resident 'leaf wrangler'!! *smile*

  6. It's so good to hear form you again! I've never had a dishwasher, and unfortunately, my sink doesn't have a window over it, but I don't seem to mind doing the dishes. We just got rid of our microwave-which I had never even considered-except it was not working unless you slammed the door really hard! So I did some reading online about alternatives to microwaves, and I think we will not be getting a new one. We are just heating stuff up on our stove in little pans-it takes the same amount of time!!!!And the food is actually better tasting.
Sorry-I didn't mean to go on....I'm so happy you saved some leaves to look at this winter.

    1. Hi Debra -- oh please go on, I love hearing from you. I'm still a microwave addict and hardly ever use the stove these day - mostly because I hate to clean the stove top *smile*.

    2. Amen to that stovetop cleaning! I allowed the cranberry sauce for Thanksgiving to boil over, and I'm still trying to get it off. Burnt on sugar must be the most stubborn! If anyone has any suggestions other than commercial stove top cleaner (which I've been using), post it here. Thanks Penny and Debra!
