Desert Beauties

Somehow, the simplest of plants always seems like a magical spectacle when walking in the desert.  Across the street from 'our' hotel in Carson City there is a small desert walk, set up on the hospital grounds.  Its a must for us each morning before our busy days begin.

This year I was fascinated by the 'fluffy' plants that we spotted as we walked. Unfortunately there are no plant names showing at their base, so we could only enjoy them in their nameless state.

The surprises of the desert landscape never ever cease to amaze me.

"I have always loved the desert.  One sits down on a desert sand dune, sees nothing, hears nothing.  Yet through the silence something throbs and gleams." - Antoine De Saint-Exupery - The Little Prince

  1. Amazing plants! More green than I would have thought. Such a wonderful place to visit.

  3. So pretty, wondering how they are surviving with record heat I heard about on the news. Glad you came home!

  4. These are lovely ... and that quote at the end is fascinating. Seeing nothing, hearing nothing in a desert - how appropriate - but how much space that exquisite silence leaves for thought. Two years ago, we visited Utah with friends and walked through a long wash canyon. The silence was total and overwhelmingly beautiful and I will never forget it. It still haunts me.

  5. I absolutely ADORE plants that thrive in the desert ... the natives & the ornamentals alike. I sure am envying your chance to walk among them for a few days!

Can help you a little with the plant names: top photo is commonly called "Smoke Bush" (for obvious reasons) and is a Cotinus, which by the way, is a most excellent plant for making leaf prints ;-) I have two varieties here in my garden in the Pacific Northwest ... they are very adaptable as long as they get lots of sun + good drainage. And your bottom photo has the wonderful common name of "Apache Plume" - a tough desert beauty - with the odd Latin name of Fallugia paradoxa.

Thank you for taking me down memory lane today, dear Penny. Has been a joy!!

  6. A special thanks to Christy for identifying these plants for me. I can certainly see this vivid color being used for leaf prints.

Also thanks to Charlton Stitcher for her comments on the desert, you captured them perfectly for me.
