A Pocket Full of Stems

                                                                             front

These bright spring days I am finding myself drawn to 'pockets'.  What fun to take a batch of 'scraps' and put them together into the form of a pocket.
                                                                            back

The idea of using embroidery to 'enhance' my stitching has been with me for several weeks.  A pocket is the perfect place to stitch a little bit here and a little bit there.

Although the pocket has a definite form -- the way its made, what is used to make it -- makes it almost an abstract form.  And that is exactly what I'm looking for these days.

"On the great canvas of time
We all create our own masterpiece.

Choreographing our steps across minutes and hours
Dancing over the days
Painting pictures over months and
Writing our stories on the years.
Singing our songs that echo across eons.

We are all a thread in the talent tapestry.
A snapshot in the cosmic, collective collage."

  1. OMGosh Penny, I am so sorry. I saw that pic of stems and my immediate thought was of our neighbor walking her dog past our house the other day. He is an elderly cocker spaniel and was carrying a twig in his mouth. She walks him every day and every day he finds a stick to carry during the entire walk and takes it home with him. She said she has a pile of them. I'm thinking if it was me, I might like a pouch to put a few of the sticks in and place it on the wall. What a great conversation piece.

    Sorry....that's how my mind wanders!!

  2. Who knew where your idea was going? I could only picture a pocket as part of another project. Now I know it *IS* the project, and it's an awesome idea. Think of the possibilities! I can see a wall full of pockets with all kinds of meaningful things inside. Well done!

  3. Love the pocket, so pretty and useful. When I used to sew my own clothes I used to make little pockets to attach to my skirt waistbands for collecting stuff.

  4. Love! As Debbie says, both pretty and useful! The twigs--I've a great fondness for twigs as they whisper, "Nature."

  6. oooooohhhhhh, pocket LOVE. Me, too! I have a whole collection of them, remnants from deconstructed natural dye experiments on thrifted clothes. Something so special about a pocket - wonder what it really is that has us so captivated? Something in our subconscious about *holding* perhaps?

  7. These are adorable! And such a delight to see how your creative musings turned out. I can't help but see naughty little faces peeking out of the tops though, not twigs!
